YOUR EMERGENCY TYRE KIT
BE PREPARED. STAY SAFE. GET BACK ON THE ROAD.
A flat tyre or unexpected puncture can happen when you least expect it. Having a few essential items in your vehicle can help you prepare for a tyre emergency, whether you’re travelling around Liverpool, heading to work or planning a longer journey.
An emergency tyre repair kit may include a portable tyre inflator, temporary puncture sealant, tyre repair tools and basic roadside safety equipment. Knowing what each item can — and cannot — do is just as important as carrying it.

Essential equipment for your vehicle
01 / SAFETY ESSENTIALS
High-visibility vest, torch and gloves
A high-visibility vest helps other road users see you when you’re in a safe place outside your vehicle. A torch, protective gloves, charged mobile phone and basic first-aid kit are also useful.
02 / PRESSURE SUPPORT
Portable tyre inflator
A compact tyre inflator can help restore pressure where appropriate. Always follow the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended tyre pressure and never inflate a tyre that appears structurally damaged.
03 / TEMPORARY SUPPORT
Emergency tyre sealant
Some vehicles carry liquid tyre sealant or an emergency puncture repair kit instead of a spare wheel. These products may temporarily seal certain small tread punctures, but they cannot repair every type of tyre damage. Follow the product instructions and driving restrictions.
04 / KNOW THE LIMITS
Sticky string tyre repair kits
External string-plug kits are sometimes used as temporary puncture solutions. They do not replace removing the tyre for an internal inspection and carrying out an approved professional repair where suitable.
05 / CHECK BEFORE YOU TRAVEL
Spare wheel, jack and wheel wrench
If your vehicle has a spare wheel, check its condition and pressure. Make sure the correct tools are present. Never attempt a wheel change where traffic, unstable ground or poor visibility makes it unsafe.
06/ SAFETY FIRST / MOTORWAY GUIDANCE
Roadside safety comes first
If you experience a tyre problem on a motorway, try to reach a service area or another place of relative safety if possible. Follow the Highway Code, stay away from moving traffic and do not attempt roadside repairs or place a warning triangle on a motorway.
If you cannot reach safety or leave your vehicle safely, remain belted in, keep your hazard lights on and call 999.
07 / PROFESSIONAL HELP
When is professional tyre assistance needed?
A tyre with sidewall damage, severe pressure loss or a puncture outside the repairable area may need replacing rather than repairing.
If you’re unsure whether your tyre is safe, avoid driving on it and seek professional advice.

TYRE CARE & PUNCTURE REPAIRS
LOOK AFTER YOUR TYRES. KNOW WHEN TO GET HELP.
Your tyres are the only part of your vehicle in contact with the road. Regular tyre checks can help improve safety, identify damage early and reduce the risk of unexpected breakdowns.
Whether you’re driving around Liverpool, commuting across Merseyside or preparing for a longer motorway journey, knowing what to check can make a real difference.
Learn how to check tyre pressure, recognise tyre damage and understand when a puncture can be safely repaired — or when a replacement is needed.

How to Read Your Tyre Size
Example: 205/55 R16 91V. 205 is width in mm; 55 is sidewall height as a percentage of width; R means radial; 16 is rim diameter in inches. 91 is the load-index code and V the speed-rating code. Check the vehicle specification before ordering; size alone is not enough.

Checking Tyre Pressure
Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s pressures for your load. Front and rear pressures may differ. Do not use the sidewall maximum as your target. Refit valve caps and investigate recurring pressure loss.

Tyre Tread & Damage
Check tread with a gauge in several places. Inspect for exposed cords and uneven wear around the full tyre. Stop safely and seek help for a bulge, exposed cords or rapid pressure loss; do not drive on a flat tyre.

Puncture Repairs

Temporary or Permanent?
Professional plug-and-patch: the tyre is removed and inspected inside and out. A suitable internal repair seals the liner and fills the puncture channel.
Repairability depends on damage, position, tyre condition and manufacturer guidance; replacement may be needed.
External string plugs are inserted without an internal inspection and are not a permanent British Standard repair. Do not assume a tyre is safe because it holds air.
For emergency kits, check expiry dates and follow speed and distance limits. Neither emergency method is universally better. Use only as permitted by the manufacturer in a safe location, arrange prompt professional inspection and tell the fitter what was used.

01 / PRESSURE
1. Check your tyre pressure regularly
Incorrect tyre pressure can affect handling, braking, fuel consumption and tyre wear.
Check your tyre pressures when the tyres are cold, using the manufacturer’s recommended pressures. These are usually found in your vehicle handbook, inside the driver’s door area or on the fuel flap.
Don’t rely solely on your dashboard tyre-pressure warning system.
03 / REPAIRABILITY
3. Can a punctured tyre be repaired?
Not every puncture can be repaired safely.
A professional tyre technician must assess the position and extent of the damage, the tyre’s condition and whether it has been driven while underinflated.
Some small punctures within the permitted tread repair area may be suitable for a professional repair.
Sidewall damage, serious structural damage and punctures outside the permitted repair area generally require tyre replacement.
05 / WARNING SIGNS
5. Warning signs you should never ignore
Seek professional tyre advice if you notice:
A tyre repeatedly losing pressure.
-
A visible bulge, deep cut or sidewall damage.
-
Uneven or unusually rapid tread wear.
-
Vibration or handling changes that may indicate a tyre or wheel problem.
-
A puncture after driving on a significantly underinflated tyre.
If you suspect your tyre is unsafe, avoid driving on it.
02 / TREAD DEPTH
2. Check your tyre tread depth
The legal minimum tread depth for most cars in the UK is 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre’s width, around its entire circumference.
However, waiting until your tyres reach the legal limit isn’t always advisable, especially in wet conditions.
Inspect your tyres regularly for uneven wear, cuts, bulges and embedded objects.
04 / REPAIR METHODS
4. Temporary tyre repairs versus professional repairs
Emergency tyre sealants and external plug kits may provide temporary assistance in certain situations, but they are not substitutes for an appropriate professional repair.
A professional repair normally involves removing the tyre from the wheel, inspecting it internally and using an approved repair method where suitable.
Always follow the tyre and repair-product manufacturer’s instructions.
06 / LOCAL ASSISTANCE
6. Mobile puncture assistance in Liverpool
A tyre problem doesn’t always happen near a garage.
